Ode to the Black Turtleneck
It’s officially autumn, which means sweater weather! Specifically, turtlenecks, and I love turtlenecks — a black turtleneck in particular. There’s just something about this timeless, iconic item of clothing that adds a little something to an outfit. (Think Audrey Hepburn, Jackie O., or Mary Tyler Moore, with their effortless elegance.)
The black turtleneck is a staple in any woman’s wardrobe. Cozy yet chic, it’s the ultimate multitasker that comes at various price points, but doesn’t have to be expensive. It’s essential for any autumn or winter day at the office, out and about, or as part of a capsule travel wardrobe. And it will never go out of style.
Turtlenecks (or as they call them here in the UK, a rollneck, or polo neck) are the one item of clothing my mother and I ever agreed on when I was growing up. I started sneaking turtlenecks out of her dresser when I was about 11 years old, but she caught on quickly on and started to buy me my own.
In my current wardrobe, I have four black turtlenecks (and several in other colours), and some of them for years. Regardless of the season I travel, I will always add at least one black turtleneck to my suitcase. That’s how much I love this versatile garment.
5 Ways to Style a Turtleneck
There are infinite ways to style a black turtleneck. Here are my favourite ways:
- Jeans – my favourite combo, that goes great with trainers, heels, flats or boots
- Winterize a dress or jumpsuit
- Short skirt or any skirt
- Snaz up your suit for the office
- Black trousers or leggings (à la Audrey)
Or however the heck you want to! You can’t go wrong with a black turtleneck. How do you style yours?
