Stuff + Things

5 Things Every City Girl Needs for Summer 2020

Whether you’re staying hyperlocal or hopping in the car for a road trip this summer, you’ll need the essentials. Here’s what’s keeping me safe and comfortable this summer.

To state the obvious, summer 2020 looks very different than in 2019. Whether you’re staying hyperlocal or hopping in the car for a road trip, there are a few things to have in your summer arsenal. Last year’s summer essentials still apply, but I’ve really streamlined what I’m carrying around with me — less to worry about keeping clean.

1. Hand sanitizer

One of the premium items of 2020 is hand sanitizer. My favourite is the Squeaky Clean hand cleanser from Vancouver-based Ativo Skincare. I also love these wipes from Thursday Plantation, and these Wet Ones are also pretty integral to carry around if you’re going to be out and about.

2. Reusable mask

Please wear a mask when you go out. Maybe not outside, unless you can’t guarantee a two metre distance. But definitely inside when running errands, etc. Are they convenient? No. And they can bother your ears and maybe give a funny tan line. But it’s a courtesy to yourself and others.

The Brit and I have a few masks from WeAir — a Vancouver company, now also making their anti-microbial fabric masks in the city. And for every mask purchased, a tree is planted.

Some other Vancouver companies making masks:

3. Sun hat

As I’ve previously mentioned, I’ve basically turned int my mother. She always wears a hat, and has several for throughout the year. I’m keeping my scalp and face protected this summer with my favourite Tilley Rafia hat (mine is a few years old, but this and this are similar), and a Tilley Mashup Airflo hat that is more for outdoorsy pursuits.

Between wearing a mask, my sunnies and a sun hat, I suppose I don’t need to worry about getting a sunburn this summer…?

4. Breezy sundresses

Prior to COVID unemployment, I was getting dressed for work at home. I’ve spent the last few weeks in my cozies as I needed to decompress, but now I’m cycling through my summer dresses so I get use out of them. Just because we’re mostly staying at home doesn’t mean we can’t feel pretty! I’ve had these Orb Clothing dresses on repeat:

5. Undershorts

Prevent chafing and that icky leg/chair feeling with a pair of undershorts. These are a true lifesaver. In my dresser, I have a few sweat-wicking Thigh Saver shorts from Knix.

I also love the super-soft bamboo shorts from Blue Sky Clothing. (Size down for the bamboo shorts.)

Most importantly, don’t forget your manners and to know before you go. Things are a mega different right now and we’re all doing our best. Stay safe my lovelies!
