Tokyo – Asakusa Market and Temple

I’m finally getting photos organized from our Japan trip. Finally. Day 3 got off to a lazy start. There wasn’t really a plan aside from being at a certain place for dinner that night. We were originally going to go the National Museum of Japanese History, but it’s a couple hours away from the apartment. By the time we got ourselves together with a plan, it was later than we thought… Oops. 🙂 So the museum was tabled to later in the week and we got on the subway to go across the city to Asakusa for a visit to Sensoji Temple (also called Asakusa Kannon Temple), and nearby Skytree…

Mexican Fiesta, Cilantro Salsa, Oscar Sunday

It’s a rainy Vancouver Sunday, but it’s Oscar telecast day, so I am choosing to pretend that I am in (what I assume is) sunny California. I can’t wait to see the pretty dresses and the handsomely dressed men and to find out who wins what. (If Anne Hathaway doesn’t win for Best Supporting Actress for Les Miserables, something is wrong with the world.) I stayed in bed reading a bit longer than planned, but that’s what Sunday’s are for, right? Yesterday was actually quite nice out and we had our lovely friend Jen over for a Mexican fiesta of sorts. I absolutely LOVE Mexican food (as demonstrated by my…

    Valentine’s Day Goat Cheese Icing

As most know, yesterday was Valentine’s Day and the world exploded with chocolate, cinnamon hearts, and red and pink coloured everything. As a corporate event planner, I am very spoiled on days like this – I got cookies, candy, you name it, from vendors and venues. All shared with my office mates and thoroughly enjoyed. My Valentine’s gift was the wonderful treat of having Sean home on a special day. Sometimes it doesn’t happen because of work schedules, so I was so happy he had the night off. It was our five year “together” anniversary on the 13th and we did a combo celebration on the 14th with a dinner…

Thankful Birthday Weekend – Part 1

As Thanksgiving weekend comes to an end, we are sitting on the couch finally getting round to watching episode one of the new season of X Factor USA and I am going through the weekend’s photos and thinking, once again, that I have so much to be thankful for. It was my birthday on Friday, and I have to say, if Facebook and text messages are good for anything in this life, they let you know how much you are loved. My iPhone buzzed all day long. And the in person wishes were even better. I have a lovely group of co-workers and friends at work, and of course, I…

Saturday Morning Fire Alarm Blueberry Buckwheat Pancakes

Back in March, I was up in Whistler for a work retreat and on one of the mornings, I went to my favourite Whistler breakfast places, La Brasserie des Artistes. It’s a small, funky place with great bacon and eggs (and great everything), but I had never tried their buttermilk pancakes. When I went in there I was actually craving French toast, which they reminded me they do not have. But the pancakes were highly recommended and since I’m allergic to strawberries (the menu item comes with a strawberry coulis), the waitress was really lovely and had the cook make me a batch with blueberries. And they were AWESOME. Easily…

Macadamia Nut “Cheese” + other dairy alternatives

Cheese. Yoghurt. Ice cream. Milk – well maybe not so much milk, (milk and I aren’t really friends) but it’s an essential ingredient for a Mac and cheese roux… I miss dairy. A lot. There’s nothing quite like our mac and cheese or the sweet but savory taste of goat cheese in a salad or on a pizza. But, I have found alternatives for the duration of OHAC (and perhaps after). CHEESE I need to start with this one because I’m incredibly proud that I have made my own non-dairy “cheese” twice now. Soy cheese is not an option on OHAC as soy is on the no-no’s list, so I…

    Sticking to the basics

In comparison to last year’s cleanse, day one of OHAC has been non-traumatic. Maybe because I sort of know what to expect and am better prepared this time ’round. I didn’t try to do anything fancy, just stuck with the basics; and it was a stress-free day. I made my breakfast protein muffins last night using the gluten-free mix, and aside from one very minor thing, they turned out fantastic. The minor thing was that the muffin liner was just not wanting to come off. I’m thinking that I either a) Buy different liners as I’m almost out anyhow; b) Grease the muffin tin and let them be au naturel; or c)…

Chocolate Decadence – Dark Chocolate Cherry Walnut Truffles

This week is chocolate week for me. Part of that is… well, if you’re a girl, you know. Part of it is that it’s almost Easter. Back in February with Valentine’s Day coming up at the time, my mind had been on chocolate. (As it is now with Easter coming up.) And then this OhSheGlows recipe came to my inbox I was very intrigued. Dark Chocolate Cherry Walnut Truffles – YUM! (OhSheGlows is a great website run by a Tonrontonian named Angela Liddon who is a vegan baker/cook. She has a really inspiring story and some super tasty recipes. The cupcakes that I made back in November are from her…
