Thankful Birthday Weekend – Part 1

As Thanksgiving weekend comes to an end, we are sitting on the couch finally getting round to watching episode one of the new season of X Factor USA and I am going through the weekend’s photos and thinking, once again, that I have so much to be thankful for. It was my birthday on Friday, and I have to say, if Facebook and text messages are good for anything in this life, they let you know how much you are loved. My iPhone buzzed all day long. And the in person wishes were even better. I have a lovely group of co-workers and friends at work, and of course, I…

Saturday Morning Fire Alarm Blueberry Buckwheat Pancakes

Back in March, I was up in Whistler for a work retreat and on one of the mornings, I went to my favourite Whistler breakfast places, La Brasserie des Artistes. It’s a small, funky place with great bacon and eggs (and great everything), but I had never tried their buttermilk pancakes. When I went in there I was actually craving French toast, which they reminded me they do not have. But the pancakes were highly recommended and since I’m allergic to strawberries (the menu item comes with a strawberry coulis), the waitress was really lovely and had the cook make me a batch with blueberries. And they were AWESOME. Easily…

Macadamia Nut “Cheese” + other dairy alternatives

Cheese. Yoghurt. Ice cream. Milk – well maybe not so much milk, (milk and I aren’t really friends) but it’s an essential ingredient for a Mac and cheese roux… I miss dairy. A lot. There’s nothing quite like our mac and cheese or the sweet but savory taste of goat cheese in a salad or on a pizza. But, I have found alternatives for the duration of OHAC (and perhaps after). CHEESE I need to start with this one because I’m incredibly proud that I have made my own non-dairy “cheese” twice now. Soy cheese is not an option on OHAC as soy is on the no-no’s list, so I…

    Sticking to the basics

In comparison to last year’s cleanse, day one of OHAC has been non-traumatic. Maybe because I sort of know what to expect and am better prepared this time ’round. I didn’t try to do anything fancy, just stuck with the basics; and it was a stress-free day. I made my breakfast protein muffins last night using the gluten-free mix, and aside from one very minor thing, they turned out fantastic. The minor thing was that the muffin liner was just not wanting to come off. I’m thinking that I either a) Buy different liners as I’m almost out anyhow; b) Grease the muffin tin and let them be au naturel; or c)…

    Tomato Basil Bisque

I’ve been down with a cold for the past few days and I have to tell you, I’m so done with the fluids. Broth and tea get boring very quickly. Even chicken noodle soup has been boring (perhaps because I didn’t have the energy to make homemade and we had Campbell’s…). So today being day 4 of fluids, I decided that I was getting my butt out of bed and making Tomato Basil Bisque with a grilled cheese sandwich. It was delicious. The recipe I use is my adaptation of a recipe I found created by the writer of The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Vegan Cooking. TOMATO BASIL BISQUE 1…

Creamy Yam Soup + Spelt Flour Soda Biscuits

Yesterday evening, I got home and impressed myself. Why? I made dinner. A proper dinner. Salmon, asparagus, mini salad, and some toasted Kamut bread. (I am incredibly proud of this feat because Sean is in Alberta right now and I have been eating very simply since he’s been gone. Cooking is more his thing – I do it when I have to, and am decent, but I’d rather bake. I haven’t been getting take out, but my meals have definitely been very basic – but healthy. Part of the reason for this is that I never remember to take stuff out of the freezer the night before or before I…

And on Sunday, I rested + Healthy Protein Power Muffins

It is Day 9 of Cleanse Lite (CL) and in theory, I should be on Day 2 of three days of nothing but vegetables and maybe some white fish. But you know what? It’s Sunday (and isn’t that the day of rest? I say this with absolutely no disrespect, but if God took a break…) And the French toast I had brunch with Sean and some friends was spectacular. (The fact that Sean was at brunch on a Sunday is the result of a very rare couple of weeks off. (I think they miss him at the theatre, but he’ll be back soon, I promise!) We walked to the Quay – long but nice…

It’s going to be a long two weeks…

Tomorrow marks the beginning of what could be a rocky two weeks for me and Sean – we are doing a cleanse. Yes, a cleanse. Two weeks of no wheat, sugar (aside from honey), caffeine, red meat, citrus fruit (excluding lemon), potatoes, corn, peanuts, dairy, vitamins supplements and no oils (excluding olive and flax). As you can imagine, this will be difficult for two people who drink a lot of green tea (yes, it’s caffeinated) and red wine (ah, Woodbridge, Cabernet Sauvignon, you will be missed) and eat a fair amount of pasta and chocolate. I make a point of eating at least close to what I should be of…
